Dear World Order: Let's reboot and fix the system
So, we're all going through some things I guess. This game has meant a lot to me for several years, and I would love to really start working on it, but it is surprisingly hard to find the time and energy right now, with everything going on. Judgement day, anyone?
For one, the war is pretty crazy. Russia rattling their nuclear arms for the first time since the fall of the wall. This happened right after the global pandemic hit, which has killed millions of people and is still raging in most countries, ravaging the poor. So that's three horsemen in two catastrophes - and I'm pretty sure hunger is already here for many people, and it's growing.
On top of this, we have climate change which is even more dangerous than global nuclear war, but politicians and oligarchs all care too much about who get to suck the last drops of fossil fuel from the ground to get it together. We're running out of oil anyway, the transition is inevitable, and yes, I get it, it's hard to quit when you're addicted to something. We need to get through this one together though, and I can't stop driving my car before we fundamentally change our society and culture. Think globally, act locally and all that is fine, but we to redefine our infrastructure, working hours, social services and form of government rather than increase our growth rate. The global system crashing. It's fine. Have you tried turning it off and on again?
I don't know how we do that, but with Gravity Break I felt was really exploring a system of agency within a simulation of economy and ecology. I've been obsessing about introducing the player to the controls or increasing simplicity and accessibility, but there is so much content that could enhance the experience much sooner, pushing for some sort of impact, a structure to really communicate and explore my core concepts, and make people play with the rules of society. I think that's what I should be focusing on, but it's really hard to make decisions like that on your own, and I feel like we're running out of time. What do you think I should do? Do you know anyone working on something similar I should hear about?
I was at a bar tonight, and was listening to Tom Waits' "Sins of my Father". A line stuck with me: "The horse is steady, but the horse is blind." I think that would be an excellent beginning for my game.
For now I'll be accepting my inevitable contribution to the destruction of our planet, through participation in a poorly structured global economy and with a collective dependence on luxury items like new clothes, year-round fruits and exotic cheese.
I hope we make it through it all, take care of yourselves.
